Oh, shit...

I've agreed to write a review of a proposal and sample chapters of a new writing text (for money). The deadline is the 19th, which I can easily meet, and, in fact, I'd been planning to work on it this weekend. Today, there's an email from the publisher offering me $100 bonus if I get it in by Monday at 8:00 am.

Should I bust my ass and get it done?

Of course! It will be no problem for you and it's an extra $100

Yes, as long as it's not going to stress you out.

No. $100 isn't worth it for the extra stress

Don't even think about it.

Damned publishers.

1. Have you already read the material?
2. How extensive is the review supposed to be?
3. How much do you want the $100?

1. I have skimmed it, but there's not a lot - it's a sample chapter with an outline of the rest.
2. Fairly (several pages), but they provide questions, so it's not really all that difficult.
3. Well, $100 is $100. Would buy me two nice bottles of Victoria Gin! Or one very nice bottle of Scotch. Or maybe four or five books...

Then I say you should knock it out! Sounds like it's not much more than one night's hard work, maybe a couple days of light/medium work. :-) Well worth the $100.

I've been in situations like this. Today, I turned one down--just didn't think I could do it. Other times I've accepted.

Provided you don't have too much else on your plate, I think you could do it easily, but (world's biggest but) you probably have lots on your plate...

I do, but... it's very tempting. And I was planning to do it over the weekend, anyway. It's just a wee bit more pressure (if anything else comes up. You know)

The key bit is
as long as it's not going to stress you out.
- if it is, it's not worth it. If you can get it done in time without stressing, though, go for it, as it will also be out of the way five days early.

Oooh, initial thought was "Oh boy 100 dollars do it do it! :D" But then remembering how ridiculously stressed out about my non-paying work, it occurred to me that it would be a bad idea to force yourself to do it too quickly if it was stressful.

But, $100! That's... half of a new iPod? (Or something there abouts?)

I say do it as long as you're not afraid to be glib.
I have done those and they ask such odd questions sometimes.
Because they have given me the questions to answer, I always feel entitled to just blather out answers and then I am done and I wait for my money.
Remember, the faster you write it, the higher the hourly wage you are earning.
Although come to think of it no one has offered me one to do this year, so maybe I was too glib and blathering! Or more likely it's that the American publishers are all melting down in the economic crisis.
Good luck!

Heh - thanks! Good advice. And I'm NOT afraid to be glib *grin*
