Oh, dear. I'm so sorry. You gave him the best life a dog could ask for, but that probably doesn't make it any easier right now. My thoughts are with you.

I'm very sorry. From everything you wrote about him, he was a splendid dog. It's hard to let a friend like that go.

Oh, what a beautiful dog. And look at that happy face, out in the wind and the open air. You can just tell he had a good life among loving people

"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace." (Milan Kundera)

Alas, alas. Here's to a true friend and a life well-lived.

The first poem here is one of three which gave me the words I could not find when a dear high school friend committed suicide a few years ago.

The second I discovered a few years after my grandmother died, and have treasured ever since.

I have no good words of my own, but I'm so sorry for your loss and I wish you all possible peace and comfort as you grieve.

"Time does not bring relief..."

Time does not bring relief; you all have lied
Who told me time would ease me of my pain!
I miss him in the weeping of the rain;
I want him at the shrinking of the tide;
The old snows melt from every mountain-side,
And last year's leaves are smoke in every lane;
But last year's bitter loving must remain
Heaped on my heart, and my old thoughts abide!
There are a hundred places where I fear
To go,--so with his memory they brim!
And entering with relief some quiet place
Where never fell his foot or shone his face
I say, "There is no memory of him here!"
And so stand stricken, so remembering him!

- Edna St Vincent Millay

Music I Heard With You

Music I heard with you was more than music,
And bread I broke with you was more than bread;
Now that I am without you, all is desolate;
All that was once so beautiful is dead.
Your hands once touched this table and this silver,
And I have seen your fingers hold this glass.
These things do not remember you, beloved, --
And yet your touch upon them will not pass.
For it was in my heart you moved among them,
And blessed them with your hands and with your eyes;
And in my heart they will remember always, --
They knew you once, O beautiful and wise.

I just read this, and I'm so sorry. I lost my beloved cat, Min, two years ago, after 18 years together, so I have some idea of how awful it is. The awfulness lasts, too, as all grief does, longer than you expect, and longer than most acquaintances and colleagues think is reasonable.

All my best wishes and sympathy in this difficult time.
