... and Cleaning

I forgot to mention that on Saturday I not only got rid of my mum's wheelchair, I cleaned my oven. This has got to be one of the most horrible but ultimately the most rewarding of household chores. Horrible because of the catch-in-your-throat fumes from even the "non-fume" oven cleaner and because of the slimy brown muck that comes off after the cleaner has done its work. But there can be few things more impressive than a shiny clean oven.

And it's likely to stay that way pretty much now since I don't really use it often any more, what with my "Miss Brill" toaster oven and all.

I'm also washing down the insides of cupboards and almost anything that shows its face as I clear things out. It's all very satisfying.

Heh. Yes, it is a rite of passage. Luckily, you may not experience it in its full glory because of the proliferation of self-cleaning ovens. This is like another lovely job - defrosting the fridge - which has become obsolete.

Here, here. Though defrosting the fridge is alive and well if you live in the kind of apartment that has the freezer compartment inside the fridge.

But seriously, let there be other, better rites of passage and let oven cleaning become obsolete. Believe me, it's just as satisying to read while your oven heats up to metal-melting temperatures and then to wipe up the little pile of dust that's left when it cools.

I think it may depend on the fridge, or its age, perhaps. I have that kind, but the freezer doesn't get frosted at all. My little deep freeze does, though, and in some ways that's harder because there's more stuff in it, which would melt while you wait for the frost to melt.
