Spam Spam Spam Spam...

What's with LJ these days? I used to promote LJ among my teaching peers because for four or five years I had almost NO spam. I've had more - on both my accounts - in the past month or so than in the whole time I've been using LJ. I don't want to lock all my posts but I may have to move to moderating comments... Or switching to Dreamwidth altogether.

What I do:

1) No anonymous comments whatsoever (I'm sorry if it discriminates against non-LJ users, but that's the way the cookie crumbles - if somebody has something to say in response to something I've said, I want to know (via at least an Internet handle) who it is, and they'd better be willing to stand behind it...)

2) moderated comments for those on LJ. Those on my friends list get a free pass and can comment anywhere, any time, on any topic. Other LJ users can comment, but their comment is screened unless and until I unscreen it. I generally do - there is frequently perfectly legitimate content there. But every so often I"ll catch some fiend in that net - a perfectly good LJ handle, but it's some Russian porn peddler with appalling pictures, and all I do with them is ban and delete them, and nobody else has to have their eyeballs bleed with looking at it.

With those two blocks in place, I've generally had it pretty good with LJ and spam so far.

Like anghara, I've just had to alter my settings to block anonymous comments. The spam wasn't even coming through on new messages either; it was in reply to posts that were months odl.

moderating anonymous messages took care of the spam problem for me.

I've noticed it too - I get about one a day right now, whereas for years I hardly ever got any. I hope it isn't a result of less active filtering on the part of LJ - many a site has descended into spam (Usenet, I'm looking in your direction) in such small increments.
